The new Resident Evil movie opens in theaters this week. Fans were eagerly awaiting the film directed by Zack Cregger, even though this adaptation seemed to stray from the source material.

This clearly hasn’t bothered the film critics, as Resident Evil currently holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 78 reviews). Some are calling it the "best horror movie of the year" and even the "best Columbia Pictures film since ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD".

"It’s a darker, more intimate story, brilliantly told by a filmmaker who fits seamlessly into the universe of a much larger franchise without ever breaking the established rules. But it’s still an excellent horror film, and a thrilling one at that."

The Financial Times also explains that "the film also turns out to be an exuberant and playful horror comedy, perfectly balanced: offbeat, darkly humorous, and genuinely funny."

What’s more, this Resident Evil movie is by far the highest-rated one in the series.
