Sony had the PC mutiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II canceled
Although it was planned during development, the multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part II ended up being scrapped. Naughty Dog chose instead to focus on a standalone online game, which also was eventually canceled during production.
As a result, fans took advantage of the launch of The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC to do the work in Sony’s place. A team called Specizer set out to design a multiplayer component using funds raised through Patreon, something that clearly didn’t sit well with PlayStation.
The modders confirmed that the Japanese company put a stop to their project, which was set to be released this month.
"Hi everyone, as you know, the multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II, which has been in development since January, was set to be released this month. Unfortunately, I recently received a letter from Sony Interactive Entertainment asking me not to release it.
I’m extremely sad that this project never saw the light of day, but I hope you’ll continue to follow me for my next project, this time, a personal one. Thank you all for your incredible support over the past year. I hope to bring you something even more ambitious soon!"
Clips from the mod are still available on YouTube.
