Hacking a PSN account is still extremely easy
This isn’t the first time that the PlayStation Network’s security vulnerabilities have been criticized by its users. That being said, a new hacking incident serves as a reminder of just how easy it is to bypass Sony’s security measures.
Colin Moriarty, a former IGN editor and founder of Last Stand Media, had his PSN account hacked and has said so on X. He had been warned by an internet user before the hack. The user had stated that malicious individuals possessed information that would allow them to carry out the attack. Shortly thereafter, Moriarty lost access to his account. Fortunately, his contacts at Sony helped him recover his profile. But not everyone is so lucky…
It’s worth recalling the method hackers use to take over PSN accounts. To do so, they simply need the PSN ID and at least one proof of a past purchase. Using this document, the hacker impersonates the account owner, contacts Sony, and has the email address and password changed. Two-factor authentication is automatically disabled.
Thus, it is essential never to publish or reveal any email containing data related to a transaction made on the PlayStation Store. Sony has not yet implemented measures to put an end to this type of hacking.
