During the presentation of its latest financial results, Sony couldn’t avoid a question about its decision to phase out physical media for PlayStation games starting in January 2028.

To justify its decision, the Japanese company highlighted the gradual shift toward digital content, not only on PlayStation, but on all forms of entertainment. The company did, however, state that it intends to "cautiously move" with this transition.

"And so when we think about the future–and we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this–and we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward."

Sony also acknowledged receiving "various opinions" regarding this decision and highlighted the "strong views" of internet users on this specific topic. The company even says it understands "those emotions" and is taking them into account, while seeking solutions to further engage players in the digital ecosystem.

Thus, PlayStation hasn’t shown any indication that it intends to reverse course and change its stance.
