Shuhei Yoshida, former president of PlayStation Studios, takes a swipe at the Steam Machine

Early tests of the Steam Machine have revealed several shortcomings so far. For an extremely high price, Valve’s console doesn’t always deliver the expected performance. In fact, it’s generally considered less powerful than a PS5.

Shuhei Yoshida, the former head of PlayStation Studios and later of independent games at PlayStation, has shared his thoughts on the Steam Machine. In a post on X, he makes a point of highlighting its subpar performance and the recommended 1080p resolution. In a slightly mocking tone, he wonders if he’s been transported back to the PS4 era. Yoshida also noted that load times can be very long at times and that the controller’s touchpad is too sensitive.

Of course, there are positives as well, particularly the user-friendly interface, the console’s quick startup, the interchangeable front panel, and the ability to access the Steam library on a TV.

All in all, Yoshida finds the Steam Machine far too expensive and difficult to recommend to gamers.
