Bungie was on the brink of closing before being acquired by Sony
While Bungie seems to be struggling more than ever due to the halt in development of Destiny 2 and the lackluster sales of Marathon, the studio could have shut down long before this painful turn of events.
Liana Ruppert, a former community manager for the American company, shared a little revelation on X. She explains that Bungie was already facing significant problems before being acquired by Sony in 2022. Closure was even a real possibility back then, not so long ago.
"Bungie was below the red line before the Sony acquisition. If it wasn’t acquired right then, the studio was very close to shutting its doors at the very least on Destiny. It was an emergency acquisition."
Thus, PlayStation reportedly saved Bungie from going under by shelling out $3.6 billion to acquire the studio. During Sony’s last fiscal year, the developer caused a $765 million loss due to the poor performance of Marathon and issues encountered with Destiny 2.
