XBOX loses lawsuit against a gamer whose account was suspended after a hack
Digital technology has certain advantages, but also many disadvantages. In April 2026, a Brazilian gamer with the username Ordo_Liberal had his account hacked. Microsoft then suspended it and deemed it « irrecoverable ».
As a result, the user lost access to his XBOX games and OneDrive files forever. Furious at being unable to play anymore, the gamer filed a lawsuit against Microsoft, which had simply told him to repurchase his lost content.
Finally, on July 12, the plaintiff won the case. In reaching its decision, the Brazilian court relied on three Brazilian consumer protection laws. The American company was therefore ordered to immediately restore the user’s XBOX account and pay him $400 in damages.
It remains to be seen whether this case will set a legal precedent to help ensure the preservation and security of digital games.
