Microsoft has begun notifying Australian players that they will soon need to verify their age online in order to play games rated for adults.

Starting in late August, Australian law will require XBOX users to prove their age using a form of ID, a selfie, or bank account information. This is required to access games rated 18+ in the country.

"As part of our compliance program in Australia, beginning late August 2026, adult XBOX accounts must verify their age to be able to access apps and games rated 18+ on the Microsoft and XBOX Store.

Access to such content may be restricted unless you verify your age. Apps and games you already own won’t be affected. Select below to verify now. Please ignore if you’ve already verified."

Note that depending on how long you’ve had your XBOX account, a simple email verification may suffice.
