The recommended RAM for Minecraft: Java Edition jumps from 4 GB to 16 GB

Mojang has updated the system requirements for running Minecraft: Java Edition on our computers. The minimum memory requirement is 8 GB with a dedicated graphics card and 12 GB with an integrated graphics card.

Meanwhile, the recommended configuration no longer calls for 4 GB of RAM, but rather 16 GB. You’ll also need a GeForce RTX 2060, a Radeon RX 5600 XT, or an Intel Arc A580. Minecraft itself requires 4 GB, and the rest is used by the operating system, the launcher, and background software.

In a press release, Mojang explained the reasons behind this change.

"The previous system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition were based on older hardware and older graphics technology. While those specs may have reflected what Minecraft needed in the past, they no longer represent what the game needs to run well today."

Since June 16, with update 26.2, Minecraft: Java Edition has been using the Vulkan rendering engine, which will completely replace OpenGL in the coming weeks and will allow the game to feature more advanced graphics.
