Although it was mentioned before the console’s launch in June 2025, VRR in TV mode had never been available on the Switch 2. Up until now, only handheld mode supported it.

This has changed thanks to the Switch 2 system update 23.0.0, which is available for download now. Of course, VRR only works on compatible displays to achieve a higher refresh rate for games that support it. The title Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour now includes a technical demo showcasing the benefits of VRR.

The update also improves other features, such as online chat, data transfer (save files and screenshots) between two Switch 2 consoles, and general settings. It even allows the use of other controllers when the Joy-Con 2 controllers are connected to the console.
