The creator of God of War believes third-party publishers are celebrating the end of physical games
While gamers are far from thrilled about Sony’s decision to phase out physical discs by January 2028, the sentiment within the industry could be very different.
In fact, aside from a few independent studios and retailers, the major publishers have remained very quiet in the wake of this announcement. According to David Jaffe, the creator of the God of War series, there’s a good reason behind this silence.
According to him, the industry’s major companies are "popping champagne" in response to PlayStation’s decision. He adds that phasing out physical media is also a matter of survival for the industry’s major players.
"Here’s the actual uncomfortable truth: Phasing out physical media is not some evil, greedy, illuminati anti-consumer plot.It is just the brutal unavoidable financial reality of an industry trying to survive…when games cost $300M.
You can see why 3rd-party publishers are not fighting Sony on this, they’re popping Champagne."
