On May 25, Nintendo decided to raise prices for the Switch 2 in Japan. The console went from ¥50,000 (€270) to ¥60,000 (€324), which is a significant increase given the country’s current economic situation.

The consequences for Nintendo were immediate. Famitsu reports that only 31,751 Switch 2 units were sold in Japan between May 25 and 31, 2026. The previous week’s total had been 247,880 units. Furthermore, the Switch 1 experienced a similar drop, with just 229 units sold during the same period, compared to 2,731 the week before.

As a reminder, the Switch 2 will be sold for €499.99 / $499.99 starting September 1, 2026, in Europe and the U.S. Nintendo will need to quickly offer major exclusives (such as Zelda and Mario) to justify the purchase of a console that has become very expensive compared to the company’s previous consoles.
