Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, says disc-based games don’t make sense
During a Q&A session with analysts following the release of financial results, the CEO of Take-Two declined to comment explicitly on the discontinuation of disc production for PlayStation games. However, other statements are noteworthy:
« Over 90% of our business is distributed digitally. We’re already a digital company. So, in some cases—especially when it comes to a major game—discs don’t really make sense for the consumer. »
Whether intentionally or not, it’s worth noting that he specifically mentioned « discs » and not « physical boxed releases », meaning, those that include a download code. He later made another statement that reinforces this point:
« Furthermore, in most cases, you have to register online to play anyway. So, if you’re already logged in, does it matter if you download it digitally? It’s the same thing, and it’s much more convenient. […] So that’s where we think the world is headed, and I think Sony understands that. »
With statements like these, and given that Sony has already confirmed its position despite the heated backlash on social media against this measure, it’s clear that Strauss Zelnick won’t be an advocate for players who want to keep physical game releases.
