SteamOS can run NVIDIA drivers now

As part of the launch of its Steam Frame, Valve spoke about another project currently in the works. Pierre-Loup Griffais, an engineer at the company, provided new details regarding a highly anticipated feature.

He noted that NVIDIA drivers can now be enabled directly in the main SteamOS development branch. This means that certain GeForce graphics cards can now work with Valve’s operating system. Widespread support would significantly increase the number of PCs that can realistically run SteamOS.

Griffais explained that this compatibility is "a top priority" for Valve. However, implementation will take time and is not currently on the agenda for the general public. At this stage, NVIDIA GPUs are able to initialize and function directly with SteamOS during development.

For now, there is a performance gap between NVIDIA GPUs running on SteamOS and those on other Linux platforms. Valve will do its best to narrow this gap.
