Steam Machine users are facing the Red Line of Death already

Any of you still remembers the infamous Red Ring of Death on the Xbox 360? That indicator light left a lasting impression on an entire generation of gamers who watched their consoles die right before their eyes. It’s a nightmare that seems to be repeating itself with the Steam Machine

On Reddit, a gamer reported experiencing a Red Line of Death (RLOD) on his machine, which had been running for only 20 minutes. Once this red line of death appears, the Steam Machine is no longer able to boot up.

The console’s support page explains the meaning of this visual indicator.

  • Solid red bar: overheating with CPU temperature > 95 °C and/or GPU temperature > 90 °C
  • Pulsing red bar in the fourth quadrant: memory (RAM) detection failure
  • Pulsing red bar on the right half: GPU failure detected
  • Pulsing red bar in the second quadrant: SSD detection failure
  • Pulsing red bar on the left half: memory training failure

If any of these technical issues occur, Valve recommends filing a warranty claim and sending the Steam Machine in for repair.
