South of Midnight wins Game of the Year after being dropped by Microsoft

Just a few days after regaining its independence, Compulsion Games won a relatively prestigious award for South of Midnight.

The Canadian studio’s latest release was named “Game of the Year” at the 2026 Games for Change festival. This nonprofit organization honors “the most impactful games and immersive experiences of the year.”

The developers gave a speech after receiving their trophy.

South of Midnight is about rising up to challenging times when it gets tough, growing, and showing resilience. And the word ‘change’ really resonates with us right now, as Compulsion Games is becoming independent again. It’s both scary and exciting. We’ve built something unique with this team, and I know that our friends, my friends and I, will carry that spirit with us wherever we go and spread it throughout the industry."*
