Sony is reportedly imposing strict social media rules on employees following all the disc controversy
PlayStation is facing never ending backlash on social media after announcing it would stop producing discs by January 2028. The Japanese company is being inundated with messages from angry users in response to this decision.
According to Alanah Pearce, who worked at Santa Monica Studio (God of War) from November 2020 to December 2024, the company has imposed very strict rules on employees at its studios regarding what they can and cannot say on social media. This is a common practice within the company, but it has reportedly been tightened in the wake of the controversy surrounding physical games.
According to Pearce, Sony anticipated this wave of discontent.
"People working at PlayStation’s in-house studios have told me that Sony implemented the strictest social media guidelines ever seen for this project. Sony regularly tells its employees what they can and cannot say about certain topics. I was subject to numerous guidelines while working on God of War Laufey. I still am, and they sent me instructions regarding what I could say on the day the game was announced.
In this specific case, these are apparently the strictest guidelines that the employees I spoke with have ever seen regarding public communication. They would only have acted this way if they knew it would cause a huge public relations problem. This comes as no surprise to them."
