While some are hoping PlayStation will go back on its decision to stop producing physical discs in January 2028, they’ll likely be in for a big disappointment! In fact, the transition is reportedly already well underway.

A new report published by an Austrian website reveals that the Thalgau factory, which works with Sony, has implemented strategic changes to produce fewer Blu-ray discs in the coming months. The Japanese company is reportedly firmly committed to building a future that is entirely focused on digital.

The same report indicates that 600,000 discs roll off the Austrian assembly lines each year, approximately 50% of which are for PlayStation. That share is set to drop to just 10% by 2028. Staff are currently being trained, and equipment is being upgraded to switch to the production of optical microlenses.

As a result, it is unlikely that PlayStation will change course, since the transition has already begun at the disc production facilities.
