PlayStation may delay the end of physical media
The end of disc production for PlayStation games is definitely not going to fade from the summer news cycle anytime soon. Today, we are reporting about a rather unexpected but very significant: the phase-out of physical media could be delayed.
In a recent podcast from Eurogamer Spain, key points were discussed on the floor of Gamescom regarding PlayStation and Xbox. In hindsight, Sony appears to have realized it had left an opening that other market players could exploit, prompting it to reorient its strategy. They could capitalize on the situation surrounding demand for physical formats to evolve their philosophy going forward.
Among these publishers is Microsoft. According to rumors, they are in discussions with all publishers, asserting that its next console will be “100% physical” with the added option to convert physical games into digital versions (as recently announced).
But that’s not all. Sony has also reportedly been approached by a "major publisher" regarding its upcoming "must-have title", with the publisher stating that if Sony were unable to guarantee a physical release, it would bypass PlayStation for its next major release.
It’s important to remember that all of this is still just a rumor, so it’s necessary to take this news with a grain of salt, especially since it would be a major story if it turned out to be true.
