Other Final Fantasy remakes may take 4 to 5 different games
To tell and revisit the story of Final Fantasy VII, Square Enix reportedly needed three separate games. This epic saga will span seven years, from the launch of the first installment to that of the third in the spring of 2027.
During this weekend’s Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest, Naoki Yoshi-P Yoshida, who oversees the development of the MMORPG, answered several questions. In particular, he was asked about potential new remakes based on older titles in the franchise. Without directly answering the question, the Japanese creator highlighted the ambition behind such projects.
According to him, four to five different games might be needed for remakes of Final Fantasy VI or Final Fantasy IX.
"Of course, I understand how players feel, but we have to think this through. Take Final Fantasy VI, for example: it’s an incredibly vast game. Its scale is simply immense. And the same goes for other titles like Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX.
Obviously, now that you’re working on the Final Fantasy VII series, I understand why players are clamoring for remakes of other titles. But if we were to remake them, we’d probably have to release them in four or even five installments."
That last statement was directed at Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. He also highlighted just how complex it is to pull off a project like this.
"That’s why I can’t just say, ‘Yes, yes, I’ll remake [FF6],’ because it’s not that simple. Every time I answer a question from a reporter or anyone else, the next day an online article announces, ‘Hamaguchi is remaking Final Fantasy VI.’ So then I have to respond, ‘No, I’m not working on that.’"
