Nintendo keeps fighting against emulator and other pirated copies of its games. As part of this effort, the Japanese company has dealt a major blow in recent hours.

The company filed seven additional DMCA takedown notices on GitHub. This led to the removal of more than 400 Switch emulator repositories, including copies of the Suyu, Yuzu, and Skyline emulators. Almost all of these code repositories were taken offline immediately.

Suyu alone accounts for 311 repositories. Nintendo issued a lengthy statement explaining this decision.

"The reported repositories offer, link to, or provide access to Nintendo Switch emulators. These emulators are primarily designed to play Nintendo Switch games. Specifically, they illegally bypass Nintendo’s TPM modules in order to run unauthorized copies of Nintendo Switch games.

Nintendo Switch games are encrypted using proprietary cryptographic keys (prod.keys) that protect against unauthorized access and copying of copyrighted games.

When running, the emulators found in the reported repositories necessarily use unauthorized copies of these cryptographic keys to decrypt unauthorized copies of Nintendo Switch games, or ROMs, at the time of execution or just before, without Nintendo’s authorization.

Thus, they are primarily designed to illegally circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected by the DMCA, and the distribution of these emulators constitutes the unlawful trafficking of technologies primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure that effectively controls access to copyrighted works."
