In Japan, more than 85% of developers use generative AI

In the midst of the 2026 Tokyo Game Show, the Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association (CESA) has released its report analyzing the Japanese gaming industry. The figures revealed in the report highlight several trends.

According to CESA, 85.6% of Japanese developers use generative artificial intelligence. A total of 63% even report using it daily, compared to 22.8% who use it occasionally. Several major companies in the industry, such as SEGA, Capcom, Konami, and Level-5, participated in this large-scale survey.

However, it is important to note that the report does not specify exactly how AI is being used. Most often, it serves as a tool to improve operational efficiency and productivity. This helps shorten production cycles and reduce development costs. The majority of respondents stated that they use AI to "perform human verification, correction, and supervision."

Last year, 51% of CESA member firms reported using generative artificial intelligence. This represents a significant year-over-year increase.
