id Software (DOOM) is going through one of the worst periods in all its history

Hard hit by the layoffs carried out by Xbox last month, id Software is now licking its wounds. The American studio has returned to the size it was ten years ago and says it is still capable of creating its own games.

However, during a recent YouTube interview, Chris Hays, who has worked at id for over 16 years as lead services programmer so far, did not hesitate to criticize Microsoft. He began by stating that team morale has never been lower. Furthermore, he believes that large corporations do not understand what makes a video game successful.

"It was so dehumanizing. It was demoralizing, and morale has never been lower.

*I think that even in companies dedicated exclusively to video games, and especially among major publishers, there’s a fundamental lack of understanding of what makes a game successful. They may understand marketing and sales figures, but when it comes to the reality of what makes a good game, the way it’s created, they’re so disconnected from it that they don’t understand what it takes to build a team, nor what it takes to keep it together. Failures are important, too.”

Finally, id Software is reportedly currently working on a new DOOM.
