GameStop's acquisition of eBay could end up being a simple partnership

On May 4, GameStop made an offer to acquire eBay for $55.5 billion. The offer was quickly rejected by eBay, deeming it "neither credible nor attractive."

Today, Bloomberg reports that GameStop may ultimately abandon this acquisition in favor of a partnership between the two companies. Ryan Cohen, CEO of the video game retailer, "is considering proposing a partnership or joint venture that would allow eBay to leverage GameStop’s approximately 1,600 retail locations in the United States."

While no decision has been made yet, GameStop would also like to have representation on eBay’s board of directors. Over the past year, GameStop’s stock has fallen 14.28% to $19.21. eBay’s stock has performed much better, climbing to $106.88 (+22.77% year-over-year). The online retail giant is in a strong position.
