Back in 2002, Square Enix proposed a brand-new RPG that was intended to be a blend of Final Fantasy and the Disney universe. This gave rise to Kingdom Hearts, a franchise that has since sold more than 38 million copies worldwide.

In an interview with Game File, Michael Eisner, who served as chairman of The Walt Disney Company from September 1984 to September 2005, was asked about the origins of Kingdom Hearts. Journalist Stephen Totilo wanted to know why he gave the green light to the creation of this franchise.

The answer may come as a surprise, but Eisner simply doesn’t remember. While he does remember what Kingdom Hearts is, he was unable to say why he gave the green light for its development.

This shows just how much of a niche business video games were for a company like Disney at the time. Today, the American company has a much stronger presence in this sector.
