Shawn Layden, a former PlayStation executive, takes aim at Game Pass… and the Xbox CEO responds

Here’s a brief and rather surprising exchange that unfolded right before our eyes on LinkedIn. Since leaving PlayStation in 2019, Shawn Layden has never minced words when it comes to trends in the video game industry.

Last week, the former head of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s U.S. division made a brief comment regarding Xbox Game Pass. He was highly critical of the service, stating that Microsoft is struggling to keep it alive despite "unfavorable diagnostics".

"They are trying so hard to will this into health, despite unfavorable diagnostics and a grim prognosis. A clarifying post mortem would do the entire industry some good."

This comment did not go unnoticed, as the current CEO of Xbox, Asha Sharma, responded directly to him on social media. "I’d love to chat with you one of these days," replied the head of Microsoft’s gaming division. It remains to be seen whether this potential future exchange will take place in private or not.
