PlayStation has canceled PHYSINT, Kojima's next game, but it has been saved by XBOX

In 2024, Sony Interactive Entertainment strengthened its partnership with Kojima Productions by announcing PHYSINT, a new spy-action game developed by the creator of Metal Gear. It was an undeniably ambitious project, billed as one of PlayStation’s future major exclusives.

Ultimately, it all fell apart on September 10, 2026. In a statement that seemed completely out of this world, PlayStation announced that it had ended its collaboration with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT, while continuing “to work closely with Hideo Kojima”. The Japanese company added that it had “great admiration for the vision” of the director of Death Stranding. Kojima clarified that he had been informed of the game’s cancellation by Sony in mid-June.

Subsequently, Xbox stepped in, officially announcing that it had acquired PHYSINT. Asha Sharma herself, the company’s CEO, confirmed this information.

"Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX."

Of course, Microsoft remains committed to OD, the upcoming horror game developed by Kojima Productions. Hideo Kojima also took the time to share a few words.

"This expands our relationship with Xbox beyond OD. As we move forward with development on PHYSINT, we remain commited to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world."
