Disney could have ended up getting its own Super Smash Bros.
What if Disney had gotten its own fighting game in the vein of Super Smash Bros.? That’s exactly what almost happened. In fact, this information comes from Ken Christiansen, a former art designer at Disney Interactive.
In his interview with Time Extension, he notes that the development of the first Kingdom Hearts was a bit complicated. At first, Disney was resistant to the idea of having several of its universes intersect in a single video game. The idea of The Lion King mixing with The Little Mermaid wasn’t exactly to the company’s liking. However, the success of the Square Enix title changed everything.
So much so that a project called Disney’s Action Figure Face Off entered pre-production shortly thereafter. It was a Smash-like game whose goal was to "take the concept of Toy Story, but have the toys battle each other." Characters from Tarzan, Treasure Planet, and The Lion King were supposed to appear. The formula was similar to that of Super Smash Bros.
Unfortunately, the game never made it past the prototype stage.
