Here’s one of the great paradoxes of the current video game industry. Whether game’s a success or not, the devs are never safe from layoffs or even closures.

Bit Reactor, which recently released the excellent Star Wars Zero Company, is now in a very precarious position. The website Game File revealed that a large portion of the staff has been furloughed. The decision is reportedly entirely Bit Reactor’s own, and not that of Electronic Arts or Disney (the license holder).

This unpaid leave reportedly affects 80% of the team. The developers who are still on the job will be responsible for fixing bugs in Zero Company. This situation is said to have been caused by the fact that Bit Reactor had exhausted all of its funds even before the game’s release.

The temporarily furloughed employees now hope to be able to return to the studio in the coming days and, in the process, receive their back pay thanks to the commercial success of Star Wars Zero Company.
