CD Projekt RED claims The Witcher 4 already runs smoothly on all platforms
There’s probably no need to recount yet again the chaotic launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2020. That painful period temporarily tarnished CD Projekt RED’s reputation, but the studio subsequently turned things around with numerous patches. However, the Polish studio is determined not to let a similar situation happen with The Witcher 4.
Co-CEO Michal Nowakowski assures us that the fourth installment of the series is already running on all platforms. Unlike Cyberpunk 2077, which was prioritized for PC at the expense of consoles, The Witcher 4 will support all platforms.
"You come to the studio, you launch Witcher 4 right now. You can launch it on PC. You can launch it on PS5. You can launch it on Xbox Series X, and it’s going to run (no mention of the Series S).
The way the studio was thinking was that we are reaching for the best possible visuals (in Cyberpunk 2077). We want to push the boundaries of what is doable in terms of cinematic feeling and whatnot, and PC was just the best suited rig for that. There was this, as it turned out, false belief that toning it down to whatever was the current gen is not going to be that much of a challenge […] Since then, we don’t take chances. We want to be sure that it actually works."
Furthermore, if a bug appears in a specific version of The Witcher 4, the development team puts everything else on hold to fix it and understand its cause. Before, if a game element missed one or two validation steps, it wouldn’t be addressed until later. Now, no detail is left to chance.
