Sony is rebooting Horizon: Hunters Gathering

Sony is reportedly rebooting Horizon: Hunters Gathering following negative feedback from private testing. Guerrilla Games has been working since June to remove the live-service elements in favor of a more traditional cooperative game, featuring a story mode and a reduced scope.

The project hasn’t been canceled, but the team will need to convince executives with a new milestone by December. A large portion of the developers will also be reassigned to another project, which is also set to be evaluated at the end of the year.

This turnaround highlights PlayStation’s struggles to impose the live-service model on its major franchises. After building its success on narrative single-player games, Sony has ramped up multiplayer projects on the PS5, resulting in plenty of failures and cancellations.

Even the acquisition of Bungie, which was supposed to bolster this strategy, has not produced the hoped-for results. At Guerrilla, the majority of the staff is now working on Hunters Gathering, while the next single-player Horizon title remains several years away from release.
