Like the original Switch, the PS5 has been plagued by numerous issues with the joysticks on its controllers. The “drift” phenomenon has affected owners of the console, who are sometimes forced to buy a new DualSense to avoid the malfunction.

Thanks to a patent published this month, we have reason to believe that the Japanese manufacturer is seeking a more durable and reliable solution. The document in question describes joysticks equipped with magnetic sensors similar to the TMR sensors seen on some third-party controllers.

The patent includes the following description:

"Thanks to the control stick and input device described here, and through the use of a non-contact tilt sensor, the stick’s movement is detected with high precision, even during prolonged use. Furthermore, since the stick’s rotation is limited by the engagement portion and the engaged portion, when a user applies force to the stick to tilt it, that force is not absorbed by its rotation, which improves maneuverability."

Furthermore, spring-return mechanisms that automatically return the joystick to the neutral position are mentioned. Stabilization structures will also serve to improve precision and extend the device’s lifespan.
