A former Valve employee blames gamers for the demise of physical media
PlayStation keeps facing thousands of negative comments regarding the discontinuation of physical disc production starting in January 2028 on social media. Fans are frustrated by this decision, which appears to be irreversible so far.
In a video posted on YouTube, Chet Faliszek, a former lead writer at Valve (Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead…), also addressed the issue. Contrary to popular sentiment, he chose instead to direct his criticism at gamers. In fact, he blames them for their consumption habits, which have allowed the digital format to gain the upper hand over physical media.
According to Faliszek, the majority of customers no longer shop at retail stores, even though the used game market remains very active. Furthermore, he criticizes the rapid adoption of services like Xbox Game Pass, which offer exclusively digital content.
"You should have started protesting against Game Pass, stopped buying Xbox games, and stopped buying digitally. But you didn’t, because it’s easier."
On the PlayStation side, 85% of sales are digital and 15% are physical. That’s still a significant figure, and on top of that, the disappearance of discs will also lead to the demise of the used market.
