ZeniMax Online Studios (The Elder Scrolls Online) is in shambles after more than 200 layoffs
We now know even more about the restructuring carried out by Xbox this week. ZeniMax Media, the parent company that owns publisher Bethesda Softworks, has been hit hard!
Following id Software, Bethesda Game Studios, and Arkane Lyon, it’s now ZeniMax Online Studios’ (ZOS) turn to lose a significant portion of its staff. The state of Maryland has confirmed that the studio behind The Elder Scrolls Online has cut 213 jobs. On top of that, an additional 166 employees were laid off within ZeniMax Media.
On social media, one employee noted that about half of the "active developers working on content" were fired overnight. On X, Andrew Young, a former ZOS employee, shared his frustration.
"I’m just so angry today. People will never know the blood, sweat, and tears that went into making ESO or how we basically funded other failing projects while never getting enough resources to really keep up with our release cadence. The team deserved much better.
I’ve been gone for a while, but talking to people today and realizing there’s really no one left and no changing it now makes my heart ache. For the people, our game, who we were as a team and a studio. This is a serious loss, and I don’t think people know how much."
We don’t know what will become of the MMO in the months and years to come.
