Nintendo could be the last console maker to support physical games
It’s now all but certain that the next consoles from Sony and Microsoft will not include a Blu-ray drive. PlayStation has announced that it will stop producing discs in January 2028.
Amid this major upheaval, one manufacturer will apparently be the exception. According to Mat Piscatella of Circana, it’s unlikely that Nintendo will abandon physical media in the near future. In the United States, the boxed game market has recently seen slight growth thanks to the Switch 2. While this trend is not expected to continue, it will encourage the Japanese company to keep up its efforts in this area.
Piscatella also predicts that Sony’s decision "unlikely to influence Nintendo’s plans" . Finally, he adds that this upheaval will not lead to the disappearance of physical boxes from store shelves. On the contrary, they could become more common, but would contain only download codes instead of the traditional disc. Digital formats are thus expected to gain even more ground in the months and years to come.
